This is a costume ball, with outrageous playful dress encouraged. The Fancy Dress is an attitude, not an expectation. There are no limits – come in a way that you sparkle, whether that is sequins and feathers or flannel and leathers. (leave mud boots at the door!)Â
If you don’t have a mask to bring, we’ll have a mask making table where you will be able to create one.Â
You are encouraged to thrift, or closet-collaborate if you’re not interested in investing in formal glamour wear. Please bring indoor shoes for dancing.
Live music, dance instruction!
Light treats and sparkling drinks will be served
Balfolk dances are simple and accessible, easy and playful. These traditional French dances are done in circles, lines and pairs. Balfolk is experiencing an international revival t
hat is sweeping across Europe, Canada and the US .
Â
FAMILY DANCEÂ Â 6:00-8:00 pm
For the first part of the evening, this will be an elegantly playful family dance. Parent-child dancing will help the children fully enjoy the styles of dance. All the dance forms will be taught by Mary Westley.
The MASKED BALLÂ Â 7:00 to 9:00 pm
For an overlapping hour, slightly more complicated dances will be taught, then we will whirl the night away with the dances we’ve learned.Â
Balfolk has wonderful opportunities for variations and improvisation on the basic steps, getting more playful as you go. No need to come with a partner, in Balfolk, it is customary to switch up partners each dance.
One of the delights of Balfolk is the connection between the musicians and the dancers. Musicians play with the dancers and the dancers play with the music.
All the dances will be taught by nationally known dance caller, Mary Westley.Â
Live music by the French Balfolk trio Malvenn, featuring Cécile Delage on Harp, Charlotte Layec on Clarinets and McKinley James on Cello.
For refreshments, we will have sparkling drinks & delicate treats. There will be a room for mask making, and fireflies in the garden. It will be a night to remember!
Clean, indoor dancing shoes (or socks) required.
Adult tickets are $50, children $25. One child (15 and under) comes free with an adult. A family ticket is $100. Children should have an adult to dance with.Â
If you have limited income, check the box for a reduction. Events like these fill our scholarship to provide opportunities for all.
